The Upsurge Of Clean Energy Projects

As demand for clean energy solutions sweeps across the globe, research from leading law firm DLA Piper has identified that there is currently double the amount of ‘planned’ hydrogen projects than ‘operational’ projects in Europe. As a result we will see a continued spike in clean energy planning demands, especially in the hydrogen industry.

DLA’s research identifies 192 planned or publicised hydrogen projects on the continent, compared to 107 currently operational projects. The report titled ‘The hydrogen Revolution in EMEA’ looks at the different paths being taken across North Africa, the Middle East and Europe, and investigates how the hydrogen market is evolving rapidly.

“All aspects of the energy and natural resources sector, across the globe, are going through immense change as they seek to address climate change issues and engage with energy transition. There are also significant economic drivers supporting that change, most notably the global need for sustainable economic recovery in a post-pandemic world. It is in that context that cleaner (and clean) hydrogen presents an opportunity to radically change the energy mix in many jurisdictions in a way that has long term benefits for both the planet and the global economy. At DLA Piper we look forward to playing a leading role in that.” said James Carter, UK head of Energy and Natural Resources at DLA Piper.

The report also highlights the challenge to ‘unlocking’ the best methods of the production of Hydrogen, and in particular ‘green hydrogen’. Green hydrogen is known as the holy grail of Hydrogen, as it’s made using renewable energy, usually from wind turbines; as opposed to production methods without the zero-carbon agenda as a key driver.

The demand for hydrogen will consistently increase towards 2050, as predicted by latest forecasts, and with an energy density more than twice that of natural gas, the hype surrounding Hydrogen is well justified. The exponential rise in planned clean energy projects is linked with governments all over the world looking at ways to build sustainable futures; and is crucial to global economic recovery in this post pandemic world.
