The U.K’s Auction Process For Clean Energy Planning Permission

Under the government’s guidance for the clean energy planning permission process, tough proposals on community consent to qualify for the auction process are placed on windfarm developers, alongside the consent of the local community through existing planning codes for English projects.

The decision to back onshore wind is “one of the first clear signs that the government really means business” on reaching its climate targets, said Keith Anderson, chief executive of Scottish Power.

Scottish Power is amongst renewable energy developers, leading a big increase in planned onshore wind farms, as the government now support wind power projects.

Governments “should not allow today’s crisis to compromise the clean energy transition”, said Fatih Birol, head of the International Energy Agency.

The global energy watchdog flagged that climate policies and economic support for the ongoing rollout of clean energy are needed from governments at a time when all countries are reeling from the economic impact of Coronavirus.

He continued, “These challenging market conditions will be a clear test for government commitments. But the good news is that, compared to economic stimulus packages of the past, we have much cheaper renewable technologies, have made major progress in electric vehicles and there is a supportive financial community for the clean energy transition”.

Adding “If the right policies are put in place there are opportunities to make the best of this situation”.
